DO NOT TRIM your wooden candle wick before the first lighting! On subsequent burns, trim to 1/4″ to 1/2″ to ensure a clean burning candle and a better crackling sound. Useful tools would be toe nail clippers, a wick trimmer, an end cutter, or just snap of the burnt wood with your fingers if no trimming tool is available. If your wooden wick candle does happen to smoke, extinguish the flame, trim the wooden wick and re-light the candle.
It is important that you remove any trimmings before lighting. This will ensure that the wax is kept clean as burnt trimmings will mix into the wax and tinge it black.
Never let the wick burn for longer than 4 hours. After 4 hours the wick will need to be re-trimmed or the flame will begin to burn too large.
The wax must be fully melted to the edge of the jar on every burn, especially the first.
Typically this will take about 1 hour per inch of the candle jar’s diameter. If the wax is not fully melted to the edge, it is unlikely to fully melt on subsequent burns, leaving your candle prone to tunneling and a shortened burn time.
